limitless

I am constantly made aware of limitations—of my own and of others.  BUT THERE IS NO LIMIT TO GOD’S LOVE.  It fills all space, all time, all of eternity.  LIMITLESS.  I don’t think I know of anything else that is truly limitless.  I think of an all you can eat buffet…but there’s a limit to how much one can consume.  Or unlimited miles on a rental car…but the car will someday die, so not limitless.  Maybe that’s why I sometimes have a hard time understanding the full capacity of God’s love, and his grace.  It’s unfathomable, yet I know it to be true.  I have experienced it.  It just doesn’t seem to be my focus.  I focus on the limitations rather than the limitlessations.  (Yes, I made that word up.)  And really that means I focus on me and the things of this world and not on God.  I focus on me and my power and how I can make it work rather than trusting it to God, 100%, from the start.

Makes me think of Bible study last night—Romans 8:26-39.  Paul ends the section with some questions.  Some powerful questions: 

What, then, shall we say in response to this?  If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?  It is God who justifies.  Who is he that condemns?  Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 

Made me realize things are so insignificant and small compared to God.  The things I think are so big—cancer, the future, marriage—those are all really so small when you stand them next to God.  Because God is using his power, not our power, his limitless power to work for those who love him (Romans 8:28).  His power is going to prevail.  Nothing stands a chance against God.  God is bigger than cancer, bigger than my future, bigger than loneliness, bigger than marriage.  God is limitless and his will will be done.  He can blast away the roadblocks I put in place—my limits, exercising my control.  But I don’t want to see my life and this world from the narrow scope of my perspective.  I want to see it the way God sees it, from his perspective.  And in doing so, fully experience how wide and long and high and deep His love is for me. 

So I bow in prayer before the Father from whom every family in heaven and on earth gets its true name.  I ask the Father in his great glory to give you the power to be strong inwardly through his Spirit.  I pray that Christ will live in your hearts by faith and that your life will be strong in love and be built on love.  And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is.  Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love.  Then you can be filed with the fullness of God.  With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or imagine.  –Ephesians 3:14-20
